Handbendi is an award-winning puppetry company based in rural Northwest Iceland. We specialise in original productions for all ages, which tour internationally. All work is created at our remote studio, where we also operate year-round community outreach programs, international artist residency, and Hvammstangi International Puppetry Festival—Iceland’s only puppetry arts festival. Our work is inspired by our surroundings, centering on small, quiet worlds that often go unnoticed, highlighting the extraordinary within the ordinary. We use sustainable materials and enjoy working with found objects that have their own stories to tell.

Hvammstangi International Puppetry Festival

HIP FEST was launched in 2020. Each year the festival offers a selection of puppetry theatre from around the world for all ages, along with workshops, social gatherings and networking opportunities. HIP Fest was awarded the prize for Best Cultural Project from the regional development agency SSNV in 2020. We are now preparing for our 5th edition, which will be held in June 2026.
